The 12 Habits of Highly Effective Programmers
.NET
 Drinking from the Firehose
.NET
Being a software developer is hard. Especially as the pace of change, it can be difficult to keep up. In this talk by Shawn Wildermuth, he will show you some of his opinions about how to find the right technologies to pay attention to and stop worrying about learning everything.
 Keynote Richard Campbell
.NET
Join Scott Stanfield as he discusses the user interface technologies of today and tomorrow with Richard Campbell. Scott’s company Vertigo has created some of the most original Silverlight applications in the world. The keynote digs into the strengths and weaknesses of Silverlight, especially in light of Flash and HTML5. Looking to the future, Scott examines how emerging platforms like Windows Phone 7 and HTML5 will stretch developer’s skills to new user experiences, and how best to prepare for them.
Creating Workflow Service with the AppFabric
.NET
The Windows Server AppFabric makes developing and hosting of Windows Workflow Foundation based services much easier. In this session Maurice de Beijer will show how to get the maximum result out of this powerful combination.
 Silverlight for the Total Klutz
.NET
Do you feel like someone pulled the rug out from underneath you as the richness of Silverlight applications explode? Do you envy the beautiful apps someone else is making? Do you know a bad application from a good application but have no idea what the differences are? Come hear from a klutz whose muse speaks in .NET languages not UI metaphor. You’ll see guidelines and techniques to survive the sudden transition to beautiful apps, without someone dropping a human designer into your project, and learn how to work with a designer should one show up. You’ll learn how to implement and modify themes, create multifunction user controls, utilize the Visual State Manager and adjust styles. You’ll also learn a little bit about how different your users are from you, ease of use and accessibility. This talk won’t turn you into an artistic designer, but it will show you how to right good looking applications.
What's New in Entity Framework 4?
.NET
Entity Framework has evolved dramatically since its first release in Visual Studio 2008 SP1. Entity Framework 4 boasts many improvements to its VS2010 designer such as pluralization support, better support for stored procedures and the ability to do model first design, rather than be limited to database first design. Changes to the EF runtime begin with support for Foreign Keys and better methods for controlling the state of your entities. But the most exciting additions to Entity Framework are its support for POCO classes (with no ties to the EF APIs) that enables persistent ignorant entities, unit testing and the ability to separate the concerns of your application even as you benefit from Entity Framework’s query and persistence capabilities. Come to this session to see how many of Entity Framework’s new features I can cover in the allotted time!
Visual Studio LightSwitch - Beyond the Basics
.NET
LightSwitch is a new product in the Visual Studio family aimed at developers who want to easily create business applications for the desktop or the cloud. In this session we’ll go beyond the basics of creating simple screens over data and demonstrate how to create screens with more advanced capabilities. You’ll see how to extend LightSwitch applications with your own Silverlight custom controls and RIA services. We’ll also talk about the architecture and additional extensibility points that are available to professional developers looking to enhance the LightSwitch developer experience.
 Persistent Ignorant Entity Framework
.NET
Entity Framework in .NET 4 has finally embraced agile development. Thanks to its new POCO support, you can now build completely persistent ignorant entity classes. In this session, we'll look at building the different ways to build POCO classes, then expose them using repositories and control transactions with a unit of work. We’ll then create fake contexts and data to perform unit testing that does not interact with the database or integrate with the EF runtime. A prior understanding of the PI and Unit Testing should keep your head from spinning too much.
 Intro to ASP.NET Security
.NET
I'm still amazed by how many ASP.NET developers have never used to forms-authentication features that come out-of-the-box. In this session, I'll show you how to set up an ASP.NET application to use the Microsoft security providers and their accompanying database, which alongside with the security web control suite, let you hit the ground running in securing your ASP.NET Web Form applications immediately.
An Introduction to Building Business Applications with WCF RIA Services
.NET
Learn how to build data driven, n-tier Rich Internet Applications (RIA) with Silverlight 4.0. Line of business applications (LOB) in Silverlight 4.0 are easy by tapping the power of WCF RIA Services, the Silverlight Toolkit, and elevated out of browser support. This demo centric session will walk you through an example of building a LOB application with Silverlight 4.0. See how Silverlight and WCF RIA Services support domain logic, services, data binding, validation, server based paging, authentication, authorization and much more.
 ASP.NET Security Extensibility
.NET
Forms-authentication is awesome but let's face it, the Microsoft built-in providers may not do enough for you, or may even do too much. Also, what if you're using a totally different data store instead of SQL Server? In this session I'll show you how to write your own custom membership and role providers so you can incorporate your own custom security for your ASP.NET applications. And guess what, they'll even automatically integrate with the security web control suite too.
 Designing and Exposing MEF Parts
.NET
The Managed Extensibility Framework let’s you create extensions to your application. This talk starts with an introduction on MEF so you don’t need previous experience. The core of the talk is strategies for designing extension points and how to expose and consume parts. Cardinality allows you to specify how many are expected and creation policy controls whether a new part is created each time one is requested. You’ll see two approaches to prioritization, a technique for falling back when parts aren’t found, sequencing parts, and making runtime decisions on what parts to select. Many of these strategies are based on export metadata, and you’ll learn how export metadata works and how to create strongly typed export metadata. This talk takes you from zero to sixty using MEF in the most common scenarios.
