While it is very simple to build client-server applications for the local area network, client-server applications across the internet are far more complicated. Especially, given that security issues will make it impossible to talk directly to a database. In this ‘serie’ of 2 articles, we will demonstrate how to design and program a client-server application for use across the internet without the need for n-tier architecture.  There are still a lot of Visual Objects programmers who use the Xbase (dbf) file system to store data. Dbf files are widely used due to the RDD technology and integration of dbserver classes in the IDE. However SQL storage has a number of advantages compared to the Dbf files, for example:
The database handles a number of aspects for you, like relate tables based on various join types and query optimization.
Constraint technology for primary key uniqueness, check constraints on columns and referential integrity constraints between tables.
Aggregate functions like sum, count and avg. for management information and reports.
Easy to use sorting and grouping in queries.
